Inside… The Ring

  • In 1989 my parents divorced.
  • In 1994 I kicked that Brandon in the gut when he bullied Robert.
  • In 1999 I pushed down my attacker for the first time.
  • In 2001 I set foot into poverty ridden Honduras for the first time.
  • In 2004 I set foot on the West Point campus for the first time thinking I wouldn’t last the week.
  • In 2008 I graduated from West Point a 2nd Lieutenant.
  • In 2009 I stepped off a C-130 in Iraq.
  • In 2012 I stepped off a helicopter in Afghanistan.
  • In 2014 I drank it all.
  • In 2015 I used cocaine for the first time.
  • In 2016 I held a gun to my head.
  • In 2017 I went to jail for the first time.
  • In 2018 I totaled my car.
  • In 2019 I filed bankruptcy.
  • In 2020 I foreclosed.

I have been near the top and far below the bottom. I’ve sat with criminals and with Umirs. I have been punched in the gut, punched in the face, bruised and beaten. In 36 years you would be hard-pressed to think of things I have not done, messed up, or faced. But I’ve never stopped fighting. I’ve never stopped going rounds. I’ve never not gotten back up after being knocked down. That means something. I don’t know exactly what it means, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t mean something. Sometimes living and living masochistically are the same thing. Sometimes life is just about stepping back inside the ring.

I’ve never backed down. I’ve never accepted defeat. The ring is where you find out who you really are. The ring is where you find out that all men bleed, and the ring is where you find that all mean bleed the same color. The ring is where you learn to win or learn to lose. I don’t know if I’ve won or lost more but this I know for sure—you become tough long before you start winning, and being tough means more to a man’s heart than any victory. Here we keep fighting. Here we always step back inside THE RING.

Sincerely,
Roman Newell
