Reading Time: 2 minutes

Her tears fill this place,
steamships run over
glossy hair,
and she is bound by virtue;
she is tossed serenity beneath
the weight,
and all of this has been removed
from her belly
while she floats in placid
beneath the terror,
in the calm,
illuminated by tears of light;
this figment,
this imagination,
this transformation
weighted by the ships
sailing over memory;
there is peace here,
there is crucifixion
underneath the chrysanthemum
and we are left to watch,
she is left to feel.

When we are without burden
we feel heavy
as we sink in water,
and when we are
we feel lighter in water;
and this is the instillation
of joy’s rudiments—
we rise when they fall,
we sink when they rise,
and shed tears
when others cannot cry.

Today I circled with a woman
like two rhinoceros’s
eyed up in prolific romance,

today I felt as a lime
lowered in floating
amber beer,

and her sunspot magnanimity
shed across
my tired, snakeskin body,

bidding me to the bottom—
to water’s bottom
where I might be in peace
despite affliction;
I watch her rest,
though the world
tramp about
and stamp her
like ships over our water;
I kiss her,
though ships steam
and men toil
to stoak engines with coal;
today I relent,
and her eyes shine with blues
deep enough
to shame the ocean,
and her eyes give pause
to the sailors,
and she walked into
the kitchen today,
withdrew a spoon,
and dipped it
into the sky’s cobbler,
and tasted it,
and her sunspots
asked the tears of light
for this dance;
and today she drifted patiently
away from her pain,
while it raged
and beckoned
her back,
and she was shorn from it;
there was a lotus flower
over my lips,
and it blossomed
when I was ready to speak,
with words of lives lived,
which I could not remember,
and I saw her,
and she saw me,
and she gleamed with

even below the surface.
