My music is the spiritual expression of what I am, my faith, my knowledge, my being. When you begin to see the possibilities of music, you desire to do something really good for people, to help humanity free itself from its hang-ups. I want to speak to their souls.”

— John Coltrane

Staging this scene.

Ambience matters. Leaves lasting impressions of romance. Set fires to roaring, fireside presence, pockets in carved out quietness. Listening. Sensual threads tug, in sweeps you away marshmallow clouds and mounds of down-feathers; quills tucked in soft quilts. Low light of lit candle, heat throws, smoky cocktail spiral… deep inhale… spice and leather. Air you breathe.

Rich. Warm. Welcoming. Melting pools of peppery pink mingling with vanilla rum and tobacco leaves float. Drizzled scent stirs blue notes, finger trace taps on skin ivory smooth, keys. Strings from violins that hum. Sax chords, breeze on skin goose bumps. Moody jazz in pastel tunes softly low on turntable spin. You go move; round and round. Poetry turns magic. Read.

So What is the best way to celebrate?
Well… that’s walkin’ moon dreams with read more poetry!!

Bold artistry is jazz and spirituality meetin’ in the open cracks of blacked ink, dog-eared pages feelin’ summertime on green dolphin streets. Sometimes I see blue in green… meadow banks of sunflowers reflections in blue prism, a canvas ripple heat wave ’round midnight. Painted rhythm picture in a frame, hangin’ from Parisian thoroughfare walls. Poise in black orchid, compass point enigma and April kisses blue skies. Meanwhile, bluebirds straighten up and fly right, winged travel toward sunsets in Spain and… a little boat sails by on maiden voyage.

Medley walking through jazz and poetry. Now all of you are in for the real treat… the pièce de résistance. A book!! Not just any book. Something unique and beautiful.

My first Smith-Corona 1940s styled typewriter. I plucked it up and put it open on the coffee table. Inserted a slice of paper. Sat for a moment while Earl Hines moved on the turntable. Had no idea what to expect. When it came out I kept with it, feeling a certain synchrony between my fingers and the playing music. It was unlike anything I’d ever written. Call it a moment of inspiration. Something handed from the ethereal remnants of creators and art they’d left behind. I’m not sure how much time it took but it wasn’t long. When my fingers stopped moving the title came immediately: Jazz In Pastel.

Many years have passed since I first wrote Jazz In Pastel and I feel the same as I did then. A special moment when jazz became corporeal words on the page. A magical experience of transference. I have done a lot of writing since then and can attest those moments are rare.

My longtime friend and creative designer, Darlene Carroll, has more than done this old poem justice by bringing it to life through conceptual creation. Handcrafted and illustrated, this beautiful design perfectly captures the essence of the original poem.
