Blacked…

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Darkness pervades…. embers ignite.

Can you HEAR them?
SEE them?
FEEL them?

The pernicious shadows that chase…

Blacked.

It’s a darker, melodic set of poetry with overtones of night, small lights illuminating overwhelming darkness; it speaks to the darkness that can inhabit us, overwhelm and frighten us, and sometimes downright consume us if we aren’t on the offensive. As Nipsey Hussle said,

There’s no point in playing defense… …that’s why I dove off the deep end without a life jacket.

by: Nipsey Hussle

Sometimes we have to go on the aggressive offense to get to where we want to be, to win the fight. Sometimes we have to enter the dark jungle and search with all our might for that small light.

Blacked is a shorter collection but it’s also filled with thoughtful metaphor. As I’m maturing as a writer there is more and more to sit with in my works. They demand more time. They demand more thought.

I have a deep love and passion for hip/hop and rap as a musical art form. I’m bringing more and more of those writing elements to my poetry—double entendres and meanings, multifaceted wordplay and enhanced complexity. If you’re paying attention you’ll find it.

As I’m growing in maturity as a writer I’m also growing in maturity as a man. It’s interesting to me as I get to observe those transformations taking place in tandem with obvious correlation. I recently discovered something about my writing as I began the design of Blacked. I began to embrace the power of my subconscious mind in producing quality poetry. The more I engaged my subconscious the more I discovered that my own mind was trying to teach me lessons and heal from past hurts in the process. I began to listen to my inner-self and give it the voice it needed.

The result? Incredible.

May you find the light as you travel through your own BLACKED JUNGLES.

Sincerely,
Roman Newell

Step inside BLACKED.  This poetry collection is incredibly powerful, haunting and mysterious.  It bids the reader entrance into the well crafted poetry contained within. You want to enter beside the young native boy into the tangled depths of an unknown journey. You can’t help that innate curiosity to push through the fear of the unknown, as you step through portals mouth.  That’s what BLACKED is going to be inside— stepping into your fears— walking with them… through them. Embracing and owning fear.

Synopsis

BLACKED comprises Roman’s first conceptual poetry collection. It is thematically designed in a series of four sectional sequences that follow a young, native, boy on his journey. The entire collection is written as a narrative poem with each of the 38 poems written as an account of the central character’s journey. The journey is physical in form, but spiritual in nature, and the adventure incorporates elements of the boy’s geographical progress with Swahili and Arabic language elements. You’ll note that the four sections are written in Swahili, translated to city, desert, savanna, and jungle. As the boy moves through the sequences of the tale he undergoes a recombinant transformation of essence and spirit, ultimately descending into a jungle of darkness which casts a physical manifestation of the torment and internal travesty he holds within.

With a slew of nods to classic literary works, from The Iliad’s Odyssey to Catch-22, this work is the most dense and thoughtful project Roman has undertaken to this point. The authentic motifs in language and culture create an immersive experience that takes you inside the boy’s spiritual and psychological metamorphosis, joining the reader with the young boy on his pilgrimage.
